During pandemic times, if your thought is how to boost your immunity naturally? Here we have a classic and elegant solution from the Vedic texts, which dates back to 5000 years, that is AYURVEDA. It educates us to maintain and preserve health. It is the art of living that focuses on preventive and healing therapies. Before that, you need to remember a famous saying, ‘Prevention is better than cure.’
The fast-paced life has affected our body not only externally, but it damaged our inner balance. Naturally, the human system can heal itself. Its capacity for healing constantly increases. The accumulation of toxins within affects the process. Panchakarma’s (Pancha = Five, Karma = Actions) five methodologies help rejuvenate and purify the body from the inside with the help of medicating oils. The special treatment of massage with medicated oils is practised in Kerala. It is done according to the ‘Charaka Samhita’ in Vedic scriptures.
Panchakarma treatment eliminates the accumulated toxins, restores the digestive fire and the balance between body and mind. This therapy presents you with a stronger and younger body that is devoid of chronic ailments. You can experience a calm, relaxed and stress-free mind. The intense detoxifying process brings balance to the three doshas (Tridosha) of the body are (i) Vata (Space and Air), (ii) Pitta (Fire and Water) and (iii) Kapha (Water and Earth). Ayurveda treats that the human body is formed with the five elements of nature.
Every human consist of his natural order, which is the balance among these three doshas. If the order is disturbed, the imbalance is created. The natural order implies a healthy condition, and disorder indicates an unhealthy state. There are continuous oscillations in the conditions between order and disorder. So, it is essential to understand the importance of the structure and nature of the order, to bring back the order from the illness. Ayurveda firmly believes in the condition that order lies within the disorder.
The Order of the body exists when the digestive fire is in balance. Three waste products (Urine, faeces and sweat) are produced and eliminated correctly from the body, there is a balance among Tridosha, and the tissues are working correctly. The mind, consciousness and senses functioning harmoniously with each other indicate the order exists in the body; if the balance is disturbed in these systems, the health disorders set in.
Before performing the panchakarma therapy, the body has to support the elimination of the toxins. Two processes make the treatment effective. These processes are included in Purvakarma (Purva= Before and Karma= Action) (i) Sneha and (ii) Svedana.
- Sneha (Oleation): The entire body is massaged with oil in a particular type ensuring that toxins are directed towards the gastrointestinal tract. Oil massage makes the tissues to be soft and supple. It is done daily for three to seven days.
- Svedana (Fomentation): Svedana is nothing but sweating or sudation. Svedana is given after every Sneha session. This methodology loosens the toxins, a herbal concoction is added to the steam. This process increases the movement of the toxins towards the gastrointestinal tract.
The five cleansing actions are carried in the process of Panchakarma Therapy. One among the following five are chosen based on the nature of the body. The five methods are as follow
1.Vamana Chikitsa (Emesis Therapy)
Vamana Chikitsa treats Kapha dominated issues. The accumulation of mucus in the tissues can cause health disorders like bronchitis, cold, cough, asthma and can cause weight gain. It removes the congestion, breathlessness and wheezing in the lungs. It clears the sinuses.
The person is given decoctions and emetic medicines. This enables to vomit and eliminate the toxins from the upper body tissues. If this method is carried out effectively, the person would feel relaxation in the lungs. He/She experiences lightness in the thoracic cavity, clear voice and clear thinking.
Virechana Chikitsa treats Pitta dominated issues. The accumulation of excess bile in the liver, gall bladder and intestine cause rashes, skin inflammations, biliary vomitings, nausea, jaundice and chronic fever attacks.
- Virechana Chikitsa (Purgation Therapy)
The therapeutic purgatives are administered to the person, which clears toxins from the bowels. While the person is undergoing the treatment, he/she is suggested to maintain a diet to balance the doshas. After this therapy, the person relives from excess pitta issues.
- Basti Chikitsa (Enema Therapy)
Basti Chikitsa treats Vata dominated issues. Vata is the fundamental cause of all diseases. Vata dominated conditions can cause arthritis, constipation and piles.
Based on the nature of the person homegrown decoctions, milk, oil or ghee are administered into the rectum as Vata is located in the large intestine. The medication through the rectum can reach the deeper tissues and bones and rectifies Vata disorder in the body.
- Nasya Chikitsa (Nasal Administration)
Nasya Chikitsa eliminates the toxins accumulated in the nose, throat, sinuses and head areas. It restores mental health. The Prana (Lifeforce) enters into the body through the inhaled breaths. It resides in the brain and control all the motor and sensory neurons.
Nasal drops are given to the person after proper Sneha and Svedana processes. The nasal passage is gently massaged by applying the oil with the little finger. It clears the issues like headaches, cerebral pain, sleep disorder, neurological disorders, respiratory ailments and hair fall issues.
- Raktamoksha Chikitsa (Cleansing and purification of blood)
Raktamoksha Chikitsa treats the ailments caused due to impure blood. The toxins accumulated in the gastrointestinal tract are absorbed into the blood and circulate in the bloodstream, causing Toxemia. Due to this condition, circulatory issues, hypertension, psoriasis, dermatitis and infections are caused.
In this treatment, some blood is removed from the veins. For this process, leeches are used. This process is called bloodletting. The bloodletting stimulates the spleen to release the antitoxic substances. Cleansing of blood can clear hypertension and circulatory issues.
Rasayana Chikitsa or Rejuvenation Therapy
Rejuvenation therapy is an anti-ageing treatment. In Ayurveda, rejuvenation treatment is named Rasayana Chikitsa (Rasa= Essence, Aayana= path, chikitsa= treatment). This process destroys old age and disease through transformation, conservation and revitalisation of energy. It boosts immunity and keeps the body and mind healthy.
Rejuvenation therapy gives longevity to the body. In this over-busy, toxic and stressful world, the accumulation of impurities is causing severe ailments. The treatment can detoxify the body, revitalise the senses and restores health, ensuring a youthful look.
